Civil Disagreement: Finding comfort and strength in bifurcation

During the pandemic, I’ve been swimming in two different waters: being on the Steering Committee at MMUUF while we attempted to guide our fellowship’s pandemic policy in science, truth, caution, UU values, and social responsibility; and struggling to understand and continue to extend grace and love to a number of individualistic, anti-vax, anti-science, loving, generous, kind people who are near and dear to my heart. This service is a reflection on my experience of oscillation between two groups of people with irreconcilable truths, trying to understand and straddle both sides of a societal divide, and dealing with the discomfort in the middle as they drift apart.

Lincoln stepped in this summer as President of the Steering Committee here at MMUUF, having previously served as Treasurer and Vice President. The last 5 years he has been working as a homemaker: a stay-at-home father of two wonderful children, as well as solo designing and building his family’s locally and sustainably sourced, post-and-beam, straw bale house. Lincoln enjoys building things (hence the house), solving puzzles (also, the house), and staying up far too late having philosophical, moral, political, and/or ethical arguments that one mostly can’t remember the next day.

Lincoln Grey will be “Looking into the Dark” and discussing how so much of what he believes is unknown and what that means.
Lincoln is a Jericho native, Father of two and currently working as a homemaker, literally: when he’s not caring for his kids as a stay at home dad, he builds a house for them to live in from the ground up. It’s currently 1/2 insulated and stays mostly warm, but by April hopefully will be much further along!

Jean’s presentation, “Places of the Heart” will be a look at a lifetime of “church shopping.”
Jean Archibald is a long time member of MMUUF and resident of Jericho and Underhill since 1958. Mother of five grown children, 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and recently celebrated her 90th birthday.

In our “This I Believe” services, fellowship members offer thoughts about what they believe and what they wonder about over the course of their spiritual journey. Shared services such as these allow MMUUF members to share their thoughts and questions and gather rewards from the wisdom and gratitude of those who are present.

Living Traditions – Artistic and Literary Expression and Indigenous American Worldviews

This talk will provide a very brief introduction to some of the artistic and literary traditions of Turtle Island (Indigenous America). Both visual and literary forms of expression have been, and continue to be, important vessels for Indigenous worldviews. Spending time with, and centering, these perspectives is valuable for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which is that these are the traditions that have known and interpreted these lands and waters for thousands of years. We will learn a bit about the history of colonization, the attempted genocide of Indigenous peoples, and the clear attempt to destroy traditional lifeways and worldviews. That will be followed by a brief overview of cultural preservation, survivance, and the ongoing living artistic and literary traditions that carry these cultural perspectives into the modern world. A few contemporary artists and writers will be introduced, and resources will be provided for further research and learning.

Heath was born and raised in Vermont but traveled and lived in many places before returning home. Heath holds a BFA in Theatre and Religious Studies from New York University and an MA in Religious Studies and Art History from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA. They have academic experience in Religious Studies, Art History, Feminist Art History, Cultural Anthropology, Theatre, and Literature. Heath is committed to the study of meaning making systems and the artistic and material practices and cultures of all peoples. They believe that the study of these elements of culture can help us to understand and care for each other, leading to more profound understanding, empathy, and compassion between individuals, communities, and cultures. Heath is now grateful to live with their amazing family on a rich and vibrant part of the land that sweeps up the side of Mt Mansfield.
